Free Blog: Profile

Behavioral analysis of criminals has slowly began to increase in the last thirty years, and there is even a special branch of the FBI dedicated to psychologically profiling killers. Since I am planning to study psychology in college this blog seems like a perfect place to try out my profiling skills.
Let's start with the times of the killings, each confirmed killing occurred on weekends or holidays around dusk or after dark. This tells us that the Zodiac most likely worked during the week and therefore could only "hunt" at times when he did not have to work. We can also deduce from this that the Zodiac lived alone, due to him operating on holidays, if he had been living with someone the person would have noticed him leaving every time there had been a killing.
Next we look at the actual killings. It is obvious that the killer had a tremendous hatred for women, this is shown in his overkill of the women he focused all his attention on them which is part of the reason that two male victims from different times survived. The Zodiac spent so much time focused on the women that he forgot to finish off the men. Now you may be asking why then the killer targeted couples when he only had rage against women. We can assume from his targeting of couples that he had a hatred of relationships most likely due to a failure to have one of his own. Now, let's take a look at how the couples were attacked, most were simply gunned down in their vehicles by a man who approached on foot. The pattern changed however when he attacked the couple at the lake, he switched to killing them with a knife. Once again he spent all his time on the woman and the man survived. While many killers use a knife because it is much more personal and symbolizes sexual penetration. This deviation from using a gun is incredibly odd, most serial killers will never voluntarily change their MO, or mode of operation. I theorize however, that the Zodiac's pleasure came not from the kills, but from the control he had over the police and the media. This could explain why it was so easy for him to change his MO.
